Wedding Planning

Top 40s, Classic Rock, Oldies…It’s Time To Pick Your Wedding Music!

There are hundreds of decisions to make before your big day.

Are you exhausted yet?!

It’s going to be a busy time and we’re here to help! The one thing that can define your wedding is the music. People can either be bored to death in their chairs or they could be shaking it all night on the dance floor.

We want to make sure your wedding is one to remember!

Here are a few key tips to picking the right music for your wedding.

Tip #1. Ask Your Guests!

Wedding Music Guests

You probably know your guests well. The fun aunt that loves ‘80s hair metal and the uncle that likes a few too many cocktails and old country music.

But it’s hard to know exactly what people are thinking and since you want people to have fun and feel included on your wedding, go ahead and ask them for their input on the music!

Include a spot on your RSVP cards for people to write in their favorite song or their favorite song that represents you!

You may be surprised by some of their choices and hearing a favorite song will definitely get them out on the dance floor!

You’ll make your guests feel extra special when they hear their song choice.

Tip #2. Trust The Professional (DJ)

Wedding Music Your Song

If there’s one thing to splurge on (after the venue!) it’s a great DJ.

A professional DJ will have a whole arsenal of dance music that will get everyone- even grandma- out on the dance floor.

DJ’s are great at reading crowds and adjusting their music choices on the fly to get everyone engaged and excited to dance!

Meet with your DJ ahead of time. Get a feel for their personality. They will have (if they’re good) a checklist of things for you to fill out so they can get a feel for your style. They’ll want to hear some songs that you like or stories from weddings you’ve attended, but trust them to add in their own twists.

Once you’ve found a great DJ, you can basically cross this task off your list- they’ve got it covered!

Tip #3. Go Beyond The First Dance Song

Wedding Music Father Daughter

As a couple, you likely have a song that you define as “yours”. The song that was on in the background of the restaurant during your first date or the funny disco song that had you both dancing like fools that hot summer night.

Once you’ve picked a DJ, let them know what your song is as a couple. They will likely have some fun ideas to tweak and customize it so it really becomes yours. Your song (the original and the remix!) will bring back memories of you and your spouse as well as the amazing wedding day you had!

But don’t stop with the basic wedding songs like first dance and the father-daughter dances, etc. Add in an upbeat song for cutting the cake or add in a funny one before the toasts to lighten the mood.

Ask your DJ for a few funny stories from their experiences. See if you can spark a few fun ideas for songs you can play throughout the night.

Last Thought

Don’t stress: your wedding is a party not a performance. At the end of the day you’ll be married to your best friend and the day will have been a success- but it doesn’t hurt to have a great soundtrack!
